Hakainde Hichilema is a renowned Zambian businessman and politician. He is the Republican President of Zambia after winning the 2021 election on 16 August 2021. HH, as popularly known, is the 7th President of Zambia serving from 24 August 2021.

President Hichilema also is and has been the president of the United Party for National Development (UPND), which has been the opposition political party since 2006.

He was sometimes referred to as a perennial president as he has contested for the presidency five times, in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2015, and 2016, but has lost all. Biography and Early Life

Hakainde Hichilema was born on 4 June 1962 in Monze, Northern Rhodesia, which is present-day Zambia. He has not shared a lot of information concerning his early life and his family at large. Neither the name of his father and his siblings are available in the media. He has tried as much as possible to keep them away from the limelight.

President HH’s mother is known as Elizabeth Mulomba. Hichilema’s mother pointed out that she was proud of the achievement of his son becoming the President of Zambia. She spoke in the residence of President Hichilema before his departure to the National Heroes Stadium for his Inauguration Ceremony.

Education

President HH studied at Kaloma primary school but has not disclosed the name of the high school he attended. Hichilema was sponsored to join the University of Zambia through a full government bursary. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Business Administration in 1986. Thereafter, he pursued an MBA in Finance and Business Strategy in the United Kingdom at the University Of Birmingham.

He started his career as a businessman after graduating, where he served as the chief executive officer of Coopers and Lybrand Zambia from 1944 to 1998. He then served as the CEO of Grant Thornton from 1998 to 2006, when he started his political career.

Hichilema is a family man with a wife and children. His wife’s name is Mutinta Hichilema, and the couple is blessed with three children. The names to his 3 children are: Habwela Hichilema, Miyanda Hichilema, and Chikonka Hichilema.

He is a Christian and a committed follower of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church. He is a Zambian multi-millionaire and the second-largest cattle rancher in his country.

Hakainde Arrest, Treason Charge and Release

Hichilema was arrested on the night of 11 April 2017 when police stormed in his home and even damaged some of his properties. The police were ordered by Lungu’s government. He was charged with treason as he was accused of endangering the president’s life after his motorcade refused to give way. This case was, however, taken as minor traffic and not treason. His arrest was condemned by The United States, The European Union, and the European Parliament.

Even the Catholic Bishops condemned the former president Lungu for detaining Hichilema and accusing him of treason charges. They called Edgar Lungu a coward. HH spent four months in jail, during which several prominent leaders were denied visiting him in prison including his wife, Mutinta Hichilema. He was held for eight days without food, water, light, or visitation, being tortured, and president Lungu was accused of having tried to kill him.

He was released from prison on 16 August 2017, and there was a celebration throughout Zambia from his supporters. Zambian authorities were congratulated by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for dropping the treason charges against Hichilema. There was a thanksgiving ceremony at the Cathedral of Holy Cross to celebrate his release.

Professional Career

President Hichilema started his political career in 2006. He became a member of the opposition, UPND, which is a liberal political party. After Anderson Mazoka died in 2006, he took over as the party’s new president. He was also the leader of the United Democratic Alliance.

During the 2006 elections, he contested for the presidency as a candidate of UDA, against Levy Mwanawasa, the candidate for Movement for Multiparty Democracy, and also Michael Sata, the candidate for Patriotic Front. He was endorsed by former president Kenneth Kaunda. He took third place after the 28 September 2006 elections.

Again, he ran for the 2008 elections as the candidate for UPND following the death of the president of the party, Levy Mwanawasa. This time, he also placed third. In June 2009, the UPND party merged with Sata’s party, PF, in order to contest for the 2011 elections together. However, the merge of the two parties collapsed in March 2011 due to tribalism and mistrust from the two parties.

Again, he was the main candidate in the 2015 presidential elections against Edgar Lungu. He narrowly lost with 27,757 votes. He denounced the elections as a sham but urged his supporters to remain calm. Again, he faced Lungu for the August 2016 presidential elections, where he was also defeated.

Hakainde Hichilema Wins the 2021 Zambia Elections

Despite having lost 5 times he ran for the presidency, Hichilema never gave up on his dreams. In 2021, he won the presidency which was his 6th time to run for the position.

These elections were held on 12 August 2021. ECZ Chairperson Esau Chulu declared Mr. Hichilema as duly Zambia’s President in the early morning of 16th August 2021.

Hichilema has polled 2,810,757 Votes from the results of 155 constituencies short, of 1 constituency, as the consolidation of votes from the Mandevu constituency was not tallied.

President Hichilema was followed by his rival Edgar Chagwa Lungu of the Patriotic Front with 1,814,201 Votes.

HH Swearing Into Presidency

President HH got into office on 24 August 2021 in the presidential inauguration done from National Heroes Stadium. He was sworn into the office alongside his Vice President, Mrs. Mutale Nalumango.

In his inauguration speech, President Hichilema said his administration will give equal opportunity to all Zambians, and pledged to ensure all citizens enjoy their freedoms as guaranteed by the constitution.

Hichilema is a recipient of the Africa Freedom Award presented to him by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. He received the award during an event which was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 27 October 2017.
