Eliud Kipchoge EGH is one of the most Kenya long-distance runners. He competes in the marathon races and formerly was competing in the 500-meter distance. He is currently the world record holder after setting a record of 2:01:39 on 16 September 2018 during the Berlin Marathon. He is the greatest marathoner of the modern era after breaking the previous record with 1 minute and 18 seconds.

Biography and Early Life

Eliud Kipchoge was born and raised in Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, Kenya, on 5 November 1984. He was brought up by a single mother and his other three siblings, and he was the youngest of all. He, however, knew his father only from pictures. He met his trainer for the first time when he was 16 years, named Patrick Sang, a former Olympic medallist in the steeplechase.

Kipchoge won the first Kenyan championships in 2002 during the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships for the junior race. He won gold for the World Cross Country Championships, held in Dublin, where he finished fifth for the Kenyan Junior team, winning gold. He then won the Kenyan 500m race for the 2002 World Junior Championships, but he got ill, so he missed the championships. During the 2003 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, he won the junior race.

He set the first world junior record in the 2003 Bislett Games in the 500-meter race, his time being 12:52:61 minutes. It was the best record until 2012 when an Ethiopian broke it, Hagos Gebrhiwet, with 12:47:53 minutes. At the final 2003 World Championships, Kipchoge won a gold medal. He participated in the 2004 Golden League in Roma Meeting. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, he won a gold medal for the 500 m final.

Kipchoge had never missed any season since 2006 except in 2014, when he did not participate in any games. During the 2006 World Championships, he won bronze for the 3000 m in Moscow. He later won San Silvestre Vallecana by the end of that year after running a 10 km road race in 26:54 minutes. He ran 4.4 laps in Vienna’s Prater Park on 12 October 2019, finishing at 1:59:40, and became the first person to break the record in history. In the 2020 London Marathon, he placed 8th with a finishing time of 2:06:49. He won the Enschede Marathon in the Netherlands in 2:04:30, followed by Jonathan Korir as his runner up finishing in 2:06:40 at his personal best.

Eliud Kipchoge’s latest win in Marathon was on 8 August 2021 when he won the gold medal for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He became the 3rd person to successfully defend his medal in the Men’s marathon. Kipchoge won the marathon with a time of 2:08:38.
