Lionel Messi Now a Free Agent, Leaves Barcelona


Lionel Messi, the Argentine professional football player who plays and captains the Argentina National Team is now a free agent. This follows the Barcelona Club communication done on 5th August 2021. Messi’s contract with Barcelona expired on 1st July 2021. The club was to renew his contract but was unable due to complications and the financial circumstances affecting Barcelona.

Following several negotiations on the contract renewal, complications got to a high notch leading the club to make such a tough decision.

The official statement released by Barcelona read as below;

“Despite having reached an agreement between Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it will not be possible to formalize due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations).

Faced with this situation, Lionel Messi will not continue to be linked to Barcelona. The two parties deeply regret that the wishes of both the player and the Club cannot finally be fulfilled.

Barça wants to thank with all the heart the player’s contribution to the aggrandizement of the institution and wishes him the best in his personal and professional life”.
