Mohammed Dewji was born Mohammed “Mo” Gulamabbas Dewji on 8th May 1975 in Ipembe, Singida, which is located in Tanzania. He is the son of Gulamabbas Dewji, his father, and Zubeda Dewji, his mother. He was raised together with his five other siblings.
Dewji almost died after birth because of having the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, a condition known as the nuchal cord. His family is Twelver Shias, whose ancestors left Gujarat in India to become traders in East Africa.
Mohammed Dewji has several siblings which include his two brothers known as Hussein Dewji and Hassan Dewji and his sister known as Fatema Dewji Jaffer. His brother Hussein Dewji is the director of sales for the MeTL Group, Hassan Dewji is the director of Human Resources while his sister Fatema Dewji Jaffer is the director of marketing for the group.

When he was of age, Dewji was taken to school just like any other child. He began his primary education at the Arusha Primary School in Arusha. He later continued his secondary level at the International School of Tanganyika [IST] in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. He was enrolled by his father at Arnold Palmer Golf Academy in Orlando, Florida and also went to Trinity Preparatory School for his 11th Grade.
Later, he went for his final year of high school at Saddle Brook High School, located in New Jersey. After graduating from high school, he decided to further his education and joined Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. There; he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in international business and finance and a minor in theology.

After working with the company for two years, he became the chief financial officer [CFO] at MeTL. This company, the MeTL Group of Companies, is the largest privately-owned conglomerate in Tanzania.
He later acquired the Tanzanian government, privatized loss-making companies, and turned them into profit centres by trimming personnel expenses. He increased MeTL’s revenues from $30 million to over $1.5 billion. The company also has investments in manufacturing, agriculture, finance, insurance, transport, trading, food and beverages and mobile telephony. The company conducts business in 11 countries and employs over 28,000 people with the aim to target over 100,000 people and also contributes 3.5 % of Tanzania’s GDP.
Mohammed also competed to become the Member of Parliament [MP] for Singida Urban after Tanzania hosted its second multiparty elections at the age of 25 years old. He won the preliminary votes for the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi [CCM] and was deemed too young to hold the parliamentary seat. During the third multi-party elections in Tanzania, he was chosen again and sworn in as an MP FOR Singida Urban constituency and served for ten years before resigning from politics.
