Lazarus Chakwera is a famous Malawian politician, theologian, and teacher who is currently the President of Malawi since June 2020. Also, in the presidency sector, he gave himself a cabinet portfolio as minister of Defence.
President Chakwera has also been the leader of the Malawi Congress Party since 2013 and was previously the leader of Opposition in the National Assembly. He was also elected as the chairperson of SADC and was also the president of Malawi Assemblies of God from 1989 to 2013.
Biography and Early Life
Lazarus Chakwera was born in Lilongwe located in Malawi on 5th April 1955. His was named Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera after birth by his parent who he has not revealed their names or either alive or dead. Also, he has not revealed any of his brothers and sister. Lazarus was born when the country was under British colonial rule and his family was subsistence farmers in the city’s outskirts.
Education
Like any other child, he was taken to school though he has not revealed his lower levels. However, he went to the University of Malawi9 and earned a Bachelor of Arts [Philosophy] Degree.
He studied theology and gained an honour degree at the University of the North in South Africa. He had his master’s degree [MTh] from the University of South Africa. He later gained an award in doctorate [D. min] from the Trinity International University in the United States.

Professional Career
Career as a Theologian
Lazarus’ career as a theologian began when he worked as an instructor at the Assemblies of God’s School of Theology and he later became the Principal. During the All Nations Theological Seminary, he used to be the co-director and a lecturer.
Again, he presided over the Malawi Assemblies of God and took many by surprise when he declared his intentions to run at a convention of the opposition Malawi Congress Party [MCP] as the president while still maintaining the Assemblies of God Presidency.
Political Career
In his political career, he had intentions to run in the MCP’s presidential race and he submitted his nomination papers while still at the helm of the Malawi Assemblies of God.
He won the nomination and was elected the president of MCP and he represented the party in the general election. Apart from being a successful main opposition party president, he also served as a member of parliament for the Lilongwe North West Constituency.
Resignation from Ministry
Later, he resigned as the head of the Malawian Assemblies of God which he did so as to concentrate more on front-line politics, taking the view that he was still serving God in another context.
Lazarus was free and joined forces with Saulos Chilima who was the UTM leader and multiple other parties to form the ‘Tonse Alliance’ in the preparation for the Malawi General elections, with Chilima running as the Vice President.
Chakwera Wins 2020 General Elections
During the 2020 elections, Chakwera defeated incumbent president Peter Mutharika, becoming the sixth president of Malawi with almost 59% votes. Malawi also became the first African Country to have its presidential election result overturned due to irregularities and the opposition leader went on to win the re-run election.
After becoming the president, he began criticism where he started appointing his family members to cabinet. The cabinet had over six members who are his relatives. Chakwera went ahead to elect his daughter as a vice president which made him face criticism. During his leadership, he has had a strong relationship with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The aim of this relationship is to promote green technologies in Malawi.
In an interview with a Broadcasting Station, Chakwera remarked that he will be elected in 2025 and Malawi Congress Party also have indicated that Chakwera will stand in 2025 because he is allowed to do so by his party’s constitution.
