Professional Career

Emmanuel Mayuka is a famous footballer from Zambia. He began playing at 17 after he joined Kabwe Worriers which is one of the biggest clubs in Zambia and is owned by the national railway company Zambia Railways. It was in this team where he flourished by scoring 15 goals in 23 games and was consequently selected to the Zambia under-17 national team. He later joined Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv before deciding to join Maccabi Tel Aviv and joined the youth team where he scored three goals. After few years, he renewed his contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

In 2010, he signed a five-year contract with Swiss club BSC Young Boys for a transfer fee of $1.7m as a replacement for Seydou Doumbia who was sold to CSKA Moscow. During a play with the Europa League against Stuttgart, he scored two goals which was a 4-2 win. He later scored a last-minute goal against Russian club FC Zenit Saint Petersburg in a UEFA Europa League match to help his team to a 2-1 home win. Emmanuel also joined Premier League side Southampton on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee of $3 million. He played as a substitute for Southampton against Manchester United at St. Mary’s Stadium and there he made his debut.

Again, he played as a substitute in a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa and won a penalty for the fourth goal. He was substituted after 55 minutes after making his first start in a 1-0 at home to Sunderland. He also played for Barnsley in the League Cup and had a victory of 5-1. Southampton manager, Ronald Koeman confirmed that Mayuka had no future there after failing to score in any of his 16 league appearances and that made him be removed from the first team. Mayuka joined French club FC Metz of Ligue 2 where he signed a three-year deal. He again joined the Egyptian club Zamalek on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

After returning to Israel, he joined Hopeal Ra’anana. He also went back to Zambia and he joined Green Buffaloes and NAPSA Stars. Internationally, Mayuka was part of the class under-20s like Stoppila Sunzu, Nyambe Mulenga, Clifford Mulenga, Rogers Kola, Fwayo Tembo, Jacob Banda, Joseph Zimba, Sebastian Mwansa, Dennis Banda, William Njovu among many more. Among the players, he was the youngest player at the FIFA U-20 World Cup and the only schoolboy in the team. Though he never scored there, he was acknowledged for his contribution to one of the finest youth squads in Zambian football history. Later, he debuted for the senior side in the COSAFA Cup where he scored the second goal in a 3-0 defeat of Mozambique. He also scored a goal for Zambia against Senegal. He played for 120 minutes against Ivory Coast in Zambia’s penalty shootout victory against Ivory Coast.
